In 3,013 infertile patients who had undergone both hysterosalpingography and diagnostic laparoscopy as a part of infertility work-up at SNUH from July 1974 to December 1987, a comparison between hysterosalpingographic and laparoscopic findings in the assessment of the tubal patency was made.
The agreement between the two findings with regard to the tubal patency was found in only 75.9% of the cases with the discrepancy rate of 24.1%(727/3,013). The false positive and negative rates in the diagnosis of the tubal patency by hysterosalpingography were 13.5%(406/3,013) and 10.7%(321/3,013), respectively.
In spite of the high discrepancy rate, both hysterosalpingography and laparoscopy are important diagnostic procedures in the infertile patients.
